Network Rail closed its East Coast and Midland Mainlines, as the rail network struggled to cope with the extreme weather. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told the BBC that it would take 'many years' to upgrade the UK's rail infrastructure to be able to cope with the heat. But could nature-based solutions provide an interim solution?
